Colorful. Eclectic. Diverse. These are all words that might come to mind when visiting Washington DC’s Adams Morgan. Conveniently located in NW DC at 18th Street and Colombia Road, the neighborhood is well known for being an activity epicenter. The bulk of the action lies on 18th street, which is littered with bars & restaurants. The hungry wanderer can choose from traditional American cuisine, Asian fusion, or Mediterranean, all within a few blocks, while those looking for more of an adventure won’t be disappointed with the neighborhoods proximity to the zoo, galleries, and independent coffee shops.

History

Unlike other neighborhoods in Washington DC, Adams Morgan is not named after a traffic circle or nearby landmark, but instead from a school district.  When the areas two school districts combined in 1958, and new boundaries were drawn, the area began being referred to as Adams Morgan.  It was not until 2010 that the neighborhood really began picking up steam and it was at this time that the18th St NW corridor was reconstructed and many new businesses began to emerge.

Getting Around

Adams Morgan is another DC neighborhood that is not accessible by the Metrorail, however there are many other options for getting around. Within walking distance commuters will find two metro stations, Woodley Park, which services the red line and Columbia Heights, which services the Green and Yellow line. Metrobus lines 42, 43, 90, 92, 93, 96 and L2 reach the area as well and, as of 2009, the DC Circulator also runs through the neighborhood. In 2010 all of the bike lanes were widened and Capital Bikeshare began to run in the neighborhood as well. Those looking to drive to the area should do so during the day when street parking is much more available rather than at night when it can be very scarce.

Living in Adams Morgan

When looking for a place to settle in Adams Morgan, one has the choice between cute and colorful row houses, mid-sized apartment buildings, or small condo buildings and lofts. Though most of the houses do not have yards, many families with young children still choose to call Adams Morgan their home because of its delightful local parks. Walter Pierce Community Park is children and dog friendly, with a playground, fields and colorful murals. The other local park, Kalorama, is another great recreation spot with the addition of a community garden that everyone in the neighborhood can enjoy and contribute to.

Where to Eat & Drink in Adams Morgan

Cajun? Check. Mediterranean? Check.  Taiwanese? Everything else? Check. The diversity that Adams Morgan boasts in its residents shines through the storefronts of its eateries. It is no surprise that in an area with over 136 nationalities that it is here you will find the top Ethiopian food in DC, right next to some of the best salsa and French cuisine. There is no limit to food in the area and while certain places, such as Cashion’s Eat Place, Mintwood Place and Jack Rose, are known for their award-winning meals and upscale atmospheres, those looking for a well-priced night out will find it in Adam’s Morgan at places like Sakuramen and The Black Squirrel.

Although there’s never a dull moment in Adams Morgan, the streets truly come alive after dinner. There are plenty of bars to choose from in the area no matter what kind of night you’re looking for. Brass Monkey offers karaoke in their basement bar while Madams Organ usually has live music and drinks served out of mason jars. Once the bars and restaurants shut down, late night munchers can head to places like Jumbo Slice or Amsterdam Falafel shop for some seriously good late night eats.

Daytime Activities

Adams Morgan is well known for its nightlife, but it goes far beyond this label. There are several recreational activities in the area and the most noted, and arguably the most fun, is the annual Adams Morgan Day festival that celebrates live music, art and international cuisine.  

The fun doesn’t stop after festival day though, as the neighborhood is full of independently owned bookshops, record stores and art galleries.  Smash Records, on 18th Street, is perfect for the punks and metal heads of D.C., whereas Crooked Beat Records, right across the street is a haven for ska and soul music-lovers alike.  In addition to music stores there are also several other shops, such as Tora Mata, that define the area with its variety of knickknacks ranging from Peruvian artwork to gemstone jewelry.
